The Hassan II Mosque: A Masterpiece Residing in Casablanca
May 17th, 2007 by Racquel Balao-as
Upon setting foot on the busy streets of Casablanca and seeing for the first time how modern this Moroccan city is, I asked myself this - “What am I going to do here?!” Obviously, seeing ultra modern skyscrapers and experiencing urban lifestyle is not my idea of an exotic vacation. However, my disappointment turned to bewilderment when I saw this magnificent structure in Casablanca that is standing nearby the Atlantic ocean – the Hassan II Mosque.

The Hassan II Mosque may be second only to Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram as the largest mosque in the world, but it holds the record for being the world’s tallest, as its minaret stands 210 metres (689 ft) high. Aside from its astounding breadth and height, the Hassan II mosque also boasts of an exceptional architectural design; thanks to more than 6,000 workers and craftsmen who devoted their precious time and artistic expertise to create such priceless work of art.
I was surprised to learn that they allow non-Muslims to enter the Hassan II mosque. In fact, Hassan II mosque is one of the only two mosques in Morocco that grant such privilege, so I immediately seized the opportunity. We were only allowed to stay and take a look inside for a limited period of time, so I savored every minute I spent in this truly awe-inspiring mosque. What more can I ask for? I have seen it all – from plaster molding sculptures to the fine paintings on the walls. A trip to Hassan II mosque is an experience that made me appreciate more the culture and heritage of Morocco. After such exciting day of exploring the city, I happily went back to my hotel feeling blessed and fulfilled.
