Saying “I Do”: A Moroccan Wedding Experience
Apr 20th, 2007 by Rcon Franchesca Pascua

Among the countless, exciting things that happened to me while traveling in different exotic places, my Moroccan wedding experience is probably the most memorable of all. Weddings in Morocco is way too different from any typical Western matrimonial ceremony.
Since I have always been fascinated with Middle Eastern cultures and traditions, I was really glad when a trusting Moroccan pal invited me to a wedding gathering. Attending traditional Moroccan events like weddings gives me the chance to meet new friends and to learn more about the prized culture of the country. At the wedding, the yummy foods were overflowing, the music was heart-thumping, and the place where the event took place was very colorful and fancy.
What I cannot forget about my Moroccan wedding experience was the way the bride and the groom danced together with their guests. The purpose of the dance was really to lead the newly weds to their bridal chamber. The ritual was really fun and everyone was clapping and really having a grand time. As proof to Moroccans’ high regard to virginity, I was really surprised when the couple showed their sheets to their guests to prove that the bride was a virgin! How about that, huh?
When the wedding party finally ended, I eagerly asked my friend what would happen next. He explained that the couple will then go to their new home for a little ceremony and to do some traditional chores to prepare the wife for housekeeping tasks. With such matrimonial traditions strictly practiced in the country, I guess a fancy honeymoon is not a priority among married Moroccans.
Anyway, I really had a fun time in the wedding. When I went back to my hotel room, the joyous music and the laughter of the people at the gathering were still lingering in my ears. I will never forget that once-in-lifetime cultural experience.
