Riad Update: Moroccan Carpets
Apr 27th, 2007 by Rcon Franchesca Pascua

Remember my previous blog entry about how I enjoyed my stay in one of the fine Riads in Marrakech city? Well, this post is actually a catchy update on that particular entry, so read on.
When I first saw the Riad establishment that I have chosen to stay in, its structure reminded me a lot about the interesting history of Morocco. I was fascinated by the place’s architecture and fixtures that made the whole area really looked like an old palace. Most of the furniture pieces in the Riad were very stylish and elegant, and the facilities were sturdy and convenient. However, there was one item in the Riad that really caught my attention and interest. I saw this beautiful and colorful stuff on the floor and from the moment I saw it, I just couldn’t get my eyes off it. This arresting item that I am talking about was the Riad’s vibrant and thick Moroccan carpet.
When I reached my suite, I learned from one of the Riad’s staff that their carpet was just among the products of the country that show Moroccans’ love for handicrafts. I also learned that the industry of carpet weaving is very important in Morocco. Hence, the government and the merchants control it. After my small chitchat with the Riad staff, I unpacked my stuff and headed to Rabat because I was told that the best and well-made carpets in the country are produced in that city. When I reached the city’s medina, I saw countless stalls that vend carpets of different colors, sizes, and Islamic art deigns. I was like a child going to a store after store just to browse and buy bright and unique carpets, which I took home as souvenirs. The items that I bought were a bit expensive because I opted to have durable rugs with numerous knots to display at my pad. Overall, I can say that carpet shopping is one of the best activities I did in Morocco!
