My Casablanca Trip Has Ended, but My Love for the City Shall Live On
May 28th, 2007 by Racquel Balao-as
Today marks the end of my exciting sojourn in Morocco’s most modern city. I am about to leave my hotel a few minutes from now. My short but worthwhile Casablanca trip has reached its final episode and I am about to start a new one at Fes. In my recent entry, I provided you a brief description of Casablanca’s past. Now, armed with basic knowledge rooted from experience, let me give you a glimpse of the present-day Casablanca.

Like in any other urban area, there are minor issues residing in Casablanca. Traffic can be horrendous sometimes and in some parts of the city, you will witness signs that poverty exists. However, I must say that these did not stop me from appreciating Casablanca. Why? Because behind all those challenges lie the many wonders and treasures that can’t be found in other parts of the world. Believe me, Casablanca has magnificent skyscrapers, industrial facilities, and one of the largest ports in the world.
Do you know that Morocco is a moderate Islamic nation? Religious tolerance is prevalent, and that spiritual open-mindedness is most evident in Casablanca. In this modern city of Morocco, women do wear their traditional veils but they are not forced to do so. Aside from having spectacular attractions, I have experienced in my Casablanca trip the warmth of the natives. Moreover, it was in my Casablanca trip where I realized that Moroccans are really proud of their identities. They do not allow modernity to take away their love for their fascinating culture and heritage.

Ah..Casablanca…
the very name evokes memories of that old Bertie Higgins’ song, the lyrics of which goes something like….
I guess there’re many broken hearts in Casablanca
You know I’ve never really been there, so, I don’t know
I guess our love story will never be seen on the big wide silver screen
But it hurt just as bad when I had to watch you go
Oh! A kiss is still a kiss in Casablanca
But a kiss is not a kiss without your sigh
Please come back to me in Casablanca
I love you more and more each day as time goes by
