Monday Morning Shopping at the Casablanca Market
May 24th, 2007 by Racquel Balao-as

It was Monday. It was just five o’clock in the morning but my Moroccan friend insisted that I should get ready for another Casablanca adventure. At first, I was hesitant and a bit annoyed too. I wanted to prolong my siesta on the snug and comfy bed of our hotel room. However, he said that the earlier we arrive at the Casablanca market, the cheaper the prices will be. That made me roll out of my bed and off to the bathroom for a quick shower.
While on our way to the old medina, I asked my friend what is it about Monday that makes it a special day for shopping. He told me that many Casablanca market merchants believe that if the first deal of the week is good, a stroke of luck will eventually follow for the latter days. Quite superficial, yes, but note that a lot of travelers benefit from this Moroccan belief.
The Casablanca market offers its shoppers a wide array of goods such as carpets, woodcrafts, and other top quality Moroccan products. You can find the freshest goods at the wet market area. Don’t be surprised if you find live turtles being peddled in the city market. These are used to make delectable turtle soup, a Moroccan dish that draws fans of exotic food from all over the world.
I also discovered something about the Casablanca market that I want to share to you guys. Handicrafts sold at the city souks are cheaper compared to the ones sold in other Moroccan cities. So, friends back at home, better reserve a space now in your room for a Moroccan handicraft and goodies that I bought from the Casablanca market.
