A Fez Event You Shouldn’t Miss
Apr 18th, 2007 by Rcon Franchesca Pascua

When I was in Fez last year, the manager of the city hotel that I stayed in told me that a grand affair will be held at the city’s medina. I was really excited when I heard the news. However, when I learned that the artists at the concert were going to play sacred music, I had second thoughts. I was never into that type of music but the hotel manager insisted that I should go to the event. After minutes of chatting, I was convinced to buy a ticket to the Fez event.
To my surprise, the affair that I thought would be dull turned out to be a famed annual event in the country. Sacred music never created any exhilarating impact to me until I attended the Fez World Sacred Music Festival. The sacred musical custom generally depicts the city’s knowledge, art, and spirituality.
I felt like I was in a different world when the artists started playing their music. The traditional Sufi chants and Spain’s gypsy songs seemed to transport me to a place where tranquility and serenity prevail. Artists from different parts of the planet gathered in this one-of-a-kind Moroccan affair and I felt so proud to have witnessed it. At the affair, famous international musicians like Esperanza Fernández (Spain) and Keyvan Chemirani’s (Iran) were the artists most revered by the crowd.
The week-long Fez event included other activities like seminars and afternoon jam sessions, but I was not able to attend all of them because I also visited other top attractions in the city. Nevertheless, the Fez World Sacred Music Festival gave me the chance to know more about Morocco’s culture as well as it truly changed my view on sacred music.
